Carolyn Rose Kortwright (nee Baldwin) was born on December 18th, 1938, in Manhattan, New York. She peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 13th, 2023. Her formative years were spent on the Lower East Side and later in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. In 1968, she established her residence on West 84th Street, Manhattan, leaving an enduring mark on the neighborhood. Carolyn was the cherished wife of the late Hector Guzman.
A graduate of CUNY Baruch with an accounting degree, Carolyn's legacy was one of unwavering dedication and fervent activism. A tenacious defender of tenants' rights, she fearlessly fought for the underserved, inspiring everyone around her. Her impact extended personally, taking on multiple cases for neighbors and landlords, offering expertise without charge. Her power of persuasion was matched only by her fearless approach, unafraid of any challenge or adversary.
Carolyn's life was a tapestry woven with vibrant threads of Latin music, dance, and culture. Her joy in dancing, singing, and photography captured the essence of her vibrant spirit. Her profound appreciation for history, language, and culture enriched every aspect of her journey.
Carolyn’s connection to the community was a testament to her compassionate soul. As a symbol of everyday strength, Carolyn became an integral part of the stoops of 84th street, where she shared stories, laughter, and support with her neighbors.
Carolyn is survived by her two children, Peter and Jessica, daughter-in-law Sangeeta, son-in-law Neil, grandchildren Antika and Toby, nephew Ronald, and niece Teresa.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26th from 10am-12pm at Evergreen Funeral Home.
