Catherine Alice Hottel Van Sickler (Kitty) passed peacefully at home April 16, 2021. Her family was by her side.
Kitty was born in Washington DC at Sibley Hospital. She is the daughter of Dr. Robert R. Hottel and Hazel Atkins, RN who shared a medical practice in DC for 50 years. Kitty was educated in Washington, DC from preschool through high school. She graduated from McKinley high school in 1945.
She obtained a Bachelors and a Masters from the University of Maryland. She owned and operated a dance school in DC for 12 years. She also taught first grade in Round Hill, VA. She married John Garrett Van Sickler (Jack) in 1950.
To escape the cold they moved to Florida in 1965. She continued to teach in Holly Hills and Fort Lauderdale between traveling extensively. Cruising was her passion and they enjoyed many fine trips.
Kitty was preceded in death by her husband John Van Sickler, her sister Hazel (Dolly) Given, her brother Robert (Bobby) Hottel. Kitty cherished life and people, and was adored by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Anne Garrett Simmons, son-in-law Peter Simmons, granddaughter Catherine Garrett Simmons and great grand- daughter Chelsea Hope Stevenson.
Services will be held 1PM Saturday May 8 at the graveside in Ebenezer Cemetery, Bluemont, Virginia. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity.
