Ismael Rivera Obituary

Ismael Rivera, 81, passed away on Wednesday, July 8th, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy of love, hard work, and devotion to his family.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ismael came to the United States in the 1960s. He first settled in Brooklyn, New York, and then moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, before he made Waldwick, New Jersey his final home, where he built a life centered on family and friendship.

A skilled auto mechanic by trade, Ismael was known for his remarkable ability to fix just about anything. Gifted with his hands, he especially enjoyed woodworking, a talent inspired by his father, who was a carpenter. Whether repairing an engine, building with wood, or lending a helping hand, Ismael took great pride in his craftsmanship and was always willing to share his knowledge with others.

Outside of work, Ismael found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved playing pool, dominoes, and darts, and he had a special fondness for raising pet birds, especially canaries. He also enjoyed cooking for those he loved, and his homemade pasteles were a favorite at family gatherings. Above all, Ismael treasured time spent with his family. He was a loving father and an especially devoted grandfather whose greatest happiness came from being surrounded by those he loved.

He is survived by his loving sons, Ismael Rivera Jr., Angelo Rivera, and Phillip Rivera; his beloved daughter, Alicia Toral, and her husband, Roger; his brother, Pedro Rivera, and his wife, Angela; his sister, Maria Torres; his cherished grandchildren, Roger, Joshua, Angelina, Ethan, and Lucy; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John John Rivera, whose memory remained forever in his heart.

Ismael will be remembered for his generous spirit, quiet strength, tireless work ethic, and unwavering love for his family. His kindness, wisdom, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to live on through the family he loved so deeply and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
