Jack McElroy Obituary

Jack McElroy, a former Professor of English literature at Saint Peter's College in New Jersey, passed away peacefully on July 26th at the age of 87. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to teaching and a passion for the written word.

Born in The Bronx in 1936, John Francis McElroy, Jr. grew up with a love for reading that would shape his career. He earned his Bachelor's, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in English Literature from Fordham University. Jack joined the faculty at Saint Peter's College in 1968 and quickly became known for his engaging teaching style. His field was Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, but he taught courses in a variety of subjects, including children’s literature.

A confirmed culture vulture, Jack loved music, theater, and art. In his retirement, he often spent his days traveling via The Path from his home in Jersey City to museums, concert halls, and theaters in Manhattan. He was known for his self-effacing wit and kindness and his love of spirited political discussions.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Carla, his three children, and their spouses: John and Kristin, Julia and Matt, and Grace. He will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren: Nick, James, and Elsa McElroy; Emma Behrens and Kate Behrens.

May he rest in peace.
