José Menes, known as “Pepe”, passed away at Jersey City Medical Center on Sunday, May 31st, 2026.
José was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, where he lived until the age of 12. As a child, he loved music. He listened intently as his sister, Carmen, took lessons, and would keep the rhythm with his feet. He taught himself how to play guitar and piano and write music. After he moved to New Jersey, he continued in his love of music by joining a Latin rock band. He loved a lot of music of the 60s and 70s, especially the Beatles.
He worked for many years as a computer programmer, having worked at IBM, the NYPD, and Mellon Investor Services. In addition to computers and tech, José loved all things Star Trek. He also enjoyed running and biking.
José was predeceased by his parents, José and Carmen, and is survived by his sister, Carmen, and his children, Robert, Alyssa, and Joshua.
In the words of Dr. Leonard McCoy… “He’s not really dead, as long as we remember him.”
Similarly, in the words of Lieutenant Tasha Yar… “Death is that state in which one exists only in the memory of others… which is why it is not an end. No goodbyes. Just good memories.”
