It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rabindranauth Singh, lovingly
known as Jai, who departed this life on June 17, 2025, at the age of 78. Jai passed
peacefully in the very place that meant so much to him, the Shiva Shakti Mandir he
founded on Newark Avenue, surrounded by the energy of his lifelong devotion.
Born in Guyana, Jai began his life of service as a teacher and was a devoted member
of the Guyana Sevashram Sangha (Coven John Ashram), where his deep commitment
to spirituality and community took root. After immigrating to the United States, he
became a beloved and familiar figure in the Indian Square community of Jersey City. As
the proud owner of Singh’s Department Store and the Shiva Shakti Mandir, Jai played a
key role in shaping a vibrant cultural and spiritual presence that has endured for
decades.
Jai was a man of deep faith, endless curiosity, and an open heart. He had a passion for
antiques and collectibles, and a gift for connecting with people from all walks of life. His
carefree spirit, welcoming nature, and ever-present smile made him a fixture in the lives
of many.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rukhmin Singh; his parents, Oree and
Itwaria Singh; his brother, Kamal Singh; and his sister, Dee. He is survived by his loving
brothers Deopaul Singh, Chandrabhan Singh, and Balwan Singh, as well as many
extended family members, lifelong friends, and members of the community he deeply
cared for.
Jai’s presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion
will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, especially within the Indian Square
community, where he leaves behind a lasting and irreplaceable imprint.
