Samy Shafik Azer

Samy Azer was born on Sunday, November 9, 1952 in Alexandria, Egypt to Shafik and Suzanna. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mervat (Ibrahim) Azer; Son Mark Azer; Daughters Sarah Michel and Marie Rose; Son-in-Laws John Paul Michel and Randy Rose; and Grandchildren Alexandria, Gabriella, Demiana and Matthew.

He is the youngest of 5 children: Nadia Fanous, husband Yousef, and children Emad and Jermin; His late sister, Ferial Issa and late husband Dr. Adly Issa, and children Nabil, Salwa, and Sheriff; his brother George Azer, wife Lily, and children Lily, Nancy, Mary, and William; his sister Nabila Grice and late husband Romany Grice, and children Niven, John, and David.

His in-laws include the late John (Hanna) and the late Wagiha Ibrahim. His 4 loving Brother-in-Laws include Nabil Abraham, wife Gehan and daughter Miriam; Nadar Ibrahim, wife Marie and children Elijah, Pia, and Joshua; Mario, wife Anna, and children Evalina and Noah; and Michael Ibrahim, and son Naseem.

Samy led a full and wonderful life, and always so smart and wise.  To get into high school in Egypt, he needed to apply. Even though he missed the deadline, he was still accepted because he was an intelligent young man and at the top of his class. He attended college in Egypt, and eventually settled in Jersey City, New Jersey in the early 1970’s. He was a hardworking, self-starter who built successful small businesses such as in Real Estate and contractor services at Azer Enterprises.

Samy enjoyed life’s simple pleasures such as family time and time spent with his grandchildren. His lively personality included his wonderful sense of humor, adventurous spirit, deep conversations stemming from a place of wisdom, and his passion for politics and history.

Samy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.  The love he extended to all he encountered was always selfless and sincere. He truly had a heart of gold. He preached love, unity, and forgiveness, just as he exemplified in his everyday life. 

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and every 2.5 minutes someone gets diagnosed with it. Samy’s birthday is Nov 9th and for his birthday, we ask friends and family to donate towards lung cancer research, and help us find a cure!
